What is 5G Core?
The 5G core is the intelligent control centre of a 5G network providing better connectivity for the end user while providing access to its services. It manages a wide range of functionalities that include user connections, authentication, and data routing, enabling the high speeds and low latency that define 5G. Built on a cloud-native architecture, the 5GC is flexible and scalable, supporting a wide range of services and applications.
The 5G Core (5GC) is the evolutionary step forward defined by 3GPP to meet the demands of 5G technology thus by supporting the 5G NR and its advanced use cases. It replaces the traditional core network architecture, offering a cloud-native, service-based foundation. In this new architecture, each network function (NF) offers one or more services to other NFs via Application Programming Interfaces (API). Each NF is formed by a combination of microservices. Some microservices can even be re-used for different NFs, making implementation more effective and facilitating independent life-cycle management – which allows upgrades and new functionalities to be deployed with zero impact on running services.
